Clever Ideas Worth knowing
|
Take
your bananas apart when you get home
from the store. If you leave them
connected at the stem, they ripen
faster. |
|
Store
your opened chunks of cheese in
aluminum foil. It will stay
fresh much longer and not mold! |
|
Peppers
with 3 bumps on the bottom are
sweeter and better for eating.
Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom
are firmer and better for cooking |
|
Add
a teaspoon of water when frying
ground beef. It will help pull
the grease away from the meat while
cooking. |
|
To
really make scrambled eggs or
omelets rich add a couple of
spoonfuls of sour cream, cream
cheese, or heavy cream in and then
beat them up |
|
For
a cool brownie treat, make brownies
as directed. Melt Andes mints in
double broiler and pour over warm
brownies. Let set for a wonderful
minty frosting |
![hand up](handup.gif) |
Add
garlic immediately to a recipe if
you want a light taste
of garlic and at the end of the
recipe if your want a stronger taste
of garlic |
|
Leftover
snickers bars from Halloween make a
delicious dessert. Simply chop them
up with the food chopper. Peel, core
and slice a few apples. Place them
in a baking dish and sprinkle the
chopped candy bars over the apples.
Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!! Serve
alone or with vanilla ice cream.
Yummm! |
|
Reheat
Pizza•Heat
up leftover pizza in a nonstick
skillet on top of the stove, set
heat to med-low and heat till warm.
This keeps the crust crispy. No
soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the
cooking channel and it really works |
|
|
Easy
Deviled Eggs •
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag.
Seal, mash till they are all broken up.
Add remainder of ingredients, reseal,
keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly,
cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze
mixture into egg. Just throw bag
away when done easy clean up |
|
Expanding
Frosting •
When you buy a container of cake
frosting from the store, whip it with
your mixer for a few minutes. You can
double it in size. You get to frost more
cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You
also eat less sugar and calories per
serving. |
|
Reheating
refrigerated bread •
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or
muffins that were refrigerated, place
them in a microwave with a cup of water.
The increased moisture will keep the
food moist and help it reheat faster |
|
Newspaper
weeds away •
Start putting in your plants, work the
nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers,
put layers around the plants overlapping
as you go cover with mulch and for-get
about weeds. Weeds will get through some
gardening plastic they will not get
through wet newspapers. |
|
![hand up](handup.gif) |
Broken
Glass • Use a
wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the
small shards of glass you can't see
easily. |
|
No
More Mosquitoes •
Place a dryer sheet in your
pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes
away. |
|
Squirrel
Away! • To
keep squirrels from eating your plants,
sprinkle your plants with cayenne
pepper. The cayenne pepper doesn't hurt
the plant and the squirrels won't come
near it. |
|
Flexible
vacuum • To
get something out of a heat register or
under the fridge add an empty paper
towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to
your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened
to get in narrow openings. |
|
Reducing
Static Cling •
Pin a small safety pin to the seam of
your slip and you will not have a clingy
skirt or dress. Same thing works with
slacks that cling when wearing panty
hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and
... ta da! ... static is gone |
|
Measuring
Cups • Before
you pour sticky substances into a
measuring cup, fill with hot
water. Dump out the hot water, but don't
dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such
as peanut butter, and watch how easily
it comes right out |
|
Re
open-ing envelopes •
If you seal an envelope and then
realize you forgot to include something
inside, just place your sealed envelope
in the freezer for an hour or two.
Viola! It unseals easily |
|
|
Conditioner
• Use your hair
conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper
than shaving cream and leaves your legs
really smooth. It's also a great way to use
up the conditioner you bought but didn't
like when you tried it in your hair. |
|
Goodbye
Fruit Flies • To
get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small
glass, fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar
and 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix
well. You will find those flies drawn to the
cup and gone forever. |
|
Get Rid of
Ants • Put small
piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They
eat it, take it 'home,' can't digest it so
it kills them. It may take a week or so,
especially if it rains, but it works and you
don't have the worry about pets or small
children being harmed How 'bout stink bugs? |

Grete Waitz, Gasparilla 15K Running Legend
Passes Away
The Gasparilla Distance Classic Association is
deeply saddened by the news that Grete Waitz, a
legendary pioneer in women's running, passed
away today after fighting a long battle with
cancer.
Waitz, who made Bayshore Boulevard her
playground, won the Gasparilla 15K a record six
times (1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1987) and
set a World Record in 1980 (48:01), was 57.
|
![hand up](handup.gif) |
A
sporting legend in her native Norway, in
addition to her performances in Tampa, Waitz was
perhaps best known for her streak of four World
Bests in the Marathon from 1978 to 1983, her
five victories at the IAAF World Cross Country
Championships, and for her record nine victories
at the New York City Marathon.
Grete was a great friend to the
Gasparilla Distance Classic, running community
and Tampa Bay community. Whether she was
competing, coaching or simply offering a
smile, training tip or word of encouragement,
she did it with great passion, dedication,
perseverance and grace...the same way that she
fought her cancer.
Though cancer took
her life, Grete's legacy will live on in the
lives of all whom she touched. |

Many of you did not know Jim
Montgomery. But, if you were a runner in
the 70's & 80's in Daytona
Beach, you knew Jim. Jim passed away on
Feb. 26, 2011 at the age of 77. The running community has lost a dear friend.
Jim was one of the charter
members of the Daytona Beach Track Club and a
three time past president. In the early
years when the club did not have money to
put on a race or buy t-shirts, it was Jim who
dug into his pockets. He sponsored the DBTC racing
team for five years and was instrumental in
keeping the club going financially for many,
many years. Jim was also a charter member
of the Daytona Beachcombers Running Club and was
our major benefactor.
Jim was born in Princeville,
Illinois in 1934. In 1952 he went off to
college in Monmouth, Ill. where he ran
track, the 880 and the long jump. He
didn't do distance. He worked his way through school, taking time off to work at
various jobs. At one time he was an
assistance store keeper for North American
Cruise Lines and sometimes entertained the guest
by doing skits, dancing and singing.
|
|
In
the fall of 1958 he moved to Deland, Florida
where he got a job building floats for Stetson
Universities 75th. anniversary. From there
he moved to Miami then back to Daytona and
settled here in 1959.
At that time, Bob Wheeler was Captain of the
Lifeguards and was giving Life Saving Course at
the old YMCA on Beach St. Jim
passed the course and became a lifeguard with
the City and was with them until 1967. Many of
you know the drills the guards must go through
each day and that is where Jim got his running
in. At the same time he also worked for the
Daytona Beach Fire Fighters |
|
In 1974, when Jim was 40 years old, he did most
of his road racing. He ran Cherry Blossom
Classic, Peachtree (won age 40-44 in 37:48), Bay
to Bay, Great Race, Peachtree Battle,
Jacksonville Beach, and Daytona’s Easter Beach
Run where he won the masters title in a time of
25:00. He ran 50 races that year and logged
some 3,000 miles in racing and training.
His claim to fame in his racing career was at
The Virginia 10 Miler in Lynchburg, VA. On
September 25, 2010 Jim completed his
37th
Virginia Ten Miler. The Virginia Ten Miler is
one of the most challenging road races in the
country. Jim is one of three that completed all
37. Jim was extremely proud that even tho he
was dead last in the race, he still placed 3rd.
in his age group of 70 & over and was escorted
to the finish line by Girls On The Run.
And now, there will only be two that have
completed 37 races. |
![](Jim2.jpg) |
|
Jim loved old things or ‘things’ with a
history. In 1993 he bought a home in Bishop
Hill, Ill. that was built in 1847 and on the
National Registry. Over the years it was a
home, a hotel and a funeral home. He
semi-restored the home. In 1989 Jim purchased
John D. Rockefeller’s 1910 beach chair. In 2003
Jim sold the chair to the Casements where it has
been on display. |
![hand up](handup.gif) |
|
Coming from a musical background and family Jim
played several different instruments including a
trumpet, cornet, baritone euphonium and a valve
trombone. You have heard the song, 76 Trombones?
Jims desire was to own 76 Trombones. He kind of
went over board and was the proud owner of over 100
trombones. Jim gives two scholarships to
Princeville High School in Illinois in honor
of Lucille Montgomery, his mother who taught piano
for 20 years, and Jim McGinnis, his grandfather, who
was a professional musician. |
|
Of all his collectables, Blue Belle, was his most
prized possession. Blue Belle was Jim's 1972
Porsche which he bought from Brumos Porsche in
Jacksonville. Prior to Blue Belle he had Rosie, a
red 1968 Porsche. Then came Sunshine, an orange
1970 Porsche but then along came Blue Belle which he
still owned. Blue Belle had three engine overalls
and finally a new engine. Blue Belle and Jim have
been to four Olympic Games. Munich, Germany in 1972
(they took the Queen Elizabeth 2 over), Montreal in
1976, Los Angeles in 1984 and Atlanta, 1996.
Blue Belle was always at all of the Daytona Beach
Track Club races back in the 80's & 90's. Jim
would put the timing clock on top of her her hood at
the Tomoka Four Miler.. She led many of the
races, including The Paul deBruyn and the Sandpiper. |
|
![](PTT07TimerJim086.jpg) |
Friends and runner's will miss Jim
and his accurate times as he was our dependable
timer at Paint The Towne and RayZ Awareness.
In the Paul deBruyn's 30K heyday,
it was Jim that started the tradition with the
Jacksonville Track Club of feeding their runner's
after the race. The JTC would charter a bus
and bring a bus load of runner's down. This
was their favorite race of the year. So they
did not have to return to Jacksonville hungry, Jim
would cook them hamburgers on the grill and make
them milk shakes. JTC loved it - and so did
Jim. And so the tradition was born of having a
food sponsor for the race. |
|
In 1974, Ted Beardsley, (DBTC president ’77) met
Paul de Bruyn at the Bali Jr. restaurant and invited
him to attend the DBTC meetings. The rest is
history. DBTC became Paul’s family and Paul became
DBTC’s sweetheart. He attended every function the
club had and looked forward each year to the Paul
deBruyn road race that is named in his honor. Paul
delighted in the attention he received and race
participants adored him. He was always the
presenter of the awards and signed autographs. It
was Jim Montgomery who saw to it that Paul was at
these functions. Jim would drive Paul everywhere.
Meetings were held at local diners back then and it
was the monthly highlight for Paul, Dick Fortier, Ed
Root and many of the old timers as well as the
younger runners who delighted in hearing the
stories, again. |
![](Paul%20&%20Jim.jpg) |
The RRCA Hall of Fame was created in 1970.
Paul deBruyn was not in the Road Runner’s Hall of
Fame so in 1980 Glenn Vincent started the ball
rolling to get Paul inducted into the RRCA American
Long Distance Running Hall of Fame. Consideration is
given to candidates' long-term athletic performance
and/or to their overall contribution to the sport.
Paul was inducted in 1983 and Jim drove Paul (in
Blue Belle) to California to receive his award.
Jim became Paul’s manager and coordinated Paul’s
'last hoorah' for the 100th Boston
Marathon in 1996.
Paul deBruyn passed away April 5, 1997, two weeks
before the running of the 101st Boston
Marathon. |
|
You could ask Jim Montgomery any facts, dates, years
of any of the top runner’s dating back to the 70’s
or anything you wanted to know about Johnny Miles or
the Boston Marathon and he could rattle off,
without hesitation, the information you want. He was
a runners walking encyclopedia, one of the most
interesting, versatile, eccentric and caring person
you would ever meet and he definitely cared about
our running community. |
|
Jim was
a pretty cool guy. If you did not know Jim,
you missed out on knowing one of life's most unique
individuals. If you knew him, you will now how
much he is going to be missed. Especially by
me. |

Mayo • May 5 |
|
![](taco-bean-ck-319881-x.jpg) |
Black Bean Tacos
This veggie taco is loaded with protein
from the beans and seitan (wheat gluten). Look for seitan
in health food stores or near tofu in larger supermarkets.
If you prefer to skip the seitan, use another can of black
beans, tofu, beef, or chicken in its place.
|
|
Ingredients
-
2 teaspoons
olive oil
-
3/4 cup
chopped onion
-
1/2 teaspoon
dried oregano
-
2
garlic cloves, minced
-
1
jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced
-
1 tablespoon
dry sherry
|
-
1 tablespoon
low-sodium soy sauce
-
1
(15-ounce) can black beans, undrained
-
1
(8-ounce) package seitan (wheat gluten), finely chopped
-
1/2 teaspoon
black pepper
-
12
taco shells
-
2 cups
shredded romaine lettuce
|
Preparation
- Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.
Add onion, oregano, garlic, and jalapeño; cook 8 minutes,
stirring frequently. Stir in sherry, soy sauce, beans, and seitan; bring to a boil. Cook 7 minutes or until liquid
almost evaporates. Sprinkle with black pepper.
- Prepare taco shells according to package directions.
Spoon about 1/3 cup bean mixture into each shell; top each
taco with about 2 1/2 tablespoons lettuce and about 2 1/2
tablespoons Avocado Salsa.

Classic Margarita
This easy cocktail is a simple mix of shaken fresh lime
juice, orange liqueur, tequila, and powdered sugar. For a
shortcut, substitute frozen limeade concentrate for the lime
juice and sugar. Like it slushy? Add ice and whiz the
mixture in a blender.
Prep: 10 min. Make any size batch of this recipe and all
the variations by simply multiplying the ingredient
measurements by the desired number of servings. For larger
batches, stir together all ingredients in a pitcher until
powdered sugar is dissolved. Chill and serve over ice. For a
sweeter drink, use 1/2 cup powdered sugar instead of 1/3
cup.

The Boston Athletic Association announced new qualifying
times and new registration procedures for the Boston
Marathon. Both go into effect for the 2012 and 2013
marathons. In 2012, the BAA will institute rolling admission
for qualifiers with the fastest runners being allowed to
enter first. The field will be filled with the fastest of
all qualifiers.
Then, in 2013, the BAA will make it more difficult to
qualify by lowering time standards by five minutes across
all age groups and both genders. The rolling admission
process also will remain in place for 2013 and future
marathons, continuing to allow the fastest runners to enter
first.
The new qualifying times and registration procedures come in
response to the 2011 Boston Marathon selling out in a record
8 hours and 3 minutes in October. With the race filling so
quickly, thousands of qualifiers were unable to register.
After the record sellout, the BAA began reviewing its
registration process and researching options to make race
entry more fair in the future, not just a sprint to the
online registration page. The BAA believes its new formula
is the fairest option that best serves the running community
and stays true to the marathon’s history as a race for
qualifiers. |

it was a good year to do it. In mid February they went

As always, the Kohrt's don't sit still for long and very

medalist), Keith Switzer (48) and Ross Bohlken (57) have been
preparing for nearly a year to break the short-course 800-meter
freestyle relay mark for their age group at a meet in October in
Orlando. To train, Charlie has been swimming with Olympian
Ryan Lochete and receiving coaching from Steve Lochete.
We're all cheering for ya Charlie! |

Rick
Snyder has hung up the racing
shoes (temporally, I'm sure). Rick continues to have heart
issues but laced up to come up from Vero to run in RayZ
Awareness. Rick, a melanoma survivor, has been one of the
races greatest supporters. Instead of running as much, he
is peddling up and down A1A with a goal to ride to Melbourne and
back, 80 mile round trip. Rick is 75 years young.
