Runner's World, Amby
Burfoot Visits Daytona |
|
![](snowrunning.jpg) ![](AmbyBurfoot1.jpg) |
![](snow.jpg) |
|
Those were the words
in an email I received
from Amby Burfoot the
first of the month.
He, his wife and brother
were thinking of coming
to Daytona for a long
weekend and wanted
to know how the running
and living conditions
were here. I went
into full mode of
telling him about our
area, suggestions as to
where to stay and
especially the running
on 23 miles of beach.
He also inquired about
running with a group.
|
|
Done deal! They
will arrive Saturday,
Feb. 26. |
|
Amby Burfoot
was born on the exact
same day and year as
President Bill Clinton
(Aug. 19, 1946). He will
move up to a new age
group this August. |
|
He began running as a
junior in high school in
1962, and have been
going relatively strong
ever since. He was the
Conn. high school 2-mile
champion in 1964, and a
two-time All-American in
cross-country at little
Wesleyan University in
Middletown, CT
(graduating in 1968).
While there, he roomed
in successive years with
Jeff Galloway and Bill
Rodgers, both of whom
went on to become major
influences in the
running boom of the last
40 years. |
|
|
While still a senior at
Wesleyan, and just 21 years
old, he won the 1968 Boston
Marathon. Later that year,
he ran his best marathon
(2:14:19) in Japan.
He also continues to run
Boston on every fifth-year
anniversary of his win, with
his next scheduled Boston
race in 2013 |
|
The big break in his life
came in 1978, when he was
offered the position of East
Coast Editor at Runner's
World Magazine. He has been
with RW ever since, in one
position or another. He says
he feels like a super-lucky,
latter-day Lou Gehrig that
he has been able to spend
the best years of his life
in a job that he would do
for free (Shhhhh ... don't
tell). |
|
These days Amby runs about
25 miles a week for fitness
and occasional racing
thrills. He figures he has
covered about 103,000 miles
in his running career. |
|
Amby often tells people that
his proudest accomplishment
in running isn't winning
Boston but running the
annual Manchester (CT)
5-Mile Road Race on
Thanksgiving Day for 46
years in a row. He won the
race nine times in the old
days, but he now considers
each successful finish on
Thanksgiving Day as far more
important than any victories
anywhere anytime. (He has
another streak, too:
He’s part of a wild and
wonderful group that runs 5
miles every Jan. 1 and then
plunges into the frigid
waters of Long Island Sound.
It's his favorite day and
event of the year.) |
![](AmbyBurfoot3.jpg) |
|
Amby currently lives and
runs in Emmaus, PA, near the
Runner's World offices. He
has two grown children
(Dan and Laura) who are
following their own unique
paths, and his wife,
Cristina, who adds spark to
his life every single day. |
|
|
|
Arriving late on the evening
of the 26th. Amby was still
up for a long run with some
Beachcombers and friends on
Sunday morning. |
|
|
![](Amby%20&%20Donna.JPG) |
![](Dave%20&%20Amby.JPG) |
Amby is now my new BFF as we
spent a lot of time
arranging his runs while
here. |
Dave Dunn graciously
showed his hospitality to
Amby at the Sunday morning
run. |
|
|
![](Amby%20&%20Running%20Group.JPG) |
After picking him up on foot
in front of the Hilton, Dave
Dunn escorted him back to
his house where the rest of
the gang was picked up.
About 12 runner's and one
support on bike.
Heading north towards the
Granada bridge, the group
picked up Sharon and Marketa
on the way. |
![hand up](handup.gif) |
![](Amby%20coming%20down%20Beach%20St..JPG) |
![](Amby%20&%20Rick1.JPG) |
Joe, Rick, Amby and Dave
have crossed the bridge and
headed south on Beach
Street. At this point,
Amby was in question on the
pace and distance but
persevered on. |
Rick and Amby enjoyed
chatting about The Comrades
Marathon which they have
both done and loved.
Amby has completed Comrades
twice. |
|
|
![](Amby%20&%20Gang2.JPG) |
It was a beautiful
morning in Daytona Beach and
the Beachcombers gave Amby a
warm welcome to our area. |

Fuel for the Long Run. Remember
that it's important to fuel your
body before, during and after
extended exercise along with
hydrating it properly. |
|
It's just as important to know
what your body can ingest
without digestive problems.
It's a good idea to practice
your nutrition on long runs, and
not wait for the event itself to
experiment |

Meet & Greet Fun Run
• January 30, 2011 •
City Island
|
|
The morning forecast
had called for sunny skies, temps in the low 70's. Perfect
weather for a Fun Run. It didn't say anything about the
fog which wrapped itself around City Island. But, at 8:30
the fog had burned off and it was a beautiful morning for
everyone to get together for a nice run, sharing of food and
fellowship. |
|
Our Fun Run
director, Rick Campos, outdid himself in supplying the runner's
with some yummy food and drink. Great Bagels from Panera's,
cream cheese, plenty of fruit, juice and coffee. |

TOUGH LOVE

Rob has
provided us with another fine article
this month, Tough Love. If you
have ever watched the Biggest Loser on
TV, this article reminds me of Bob and
Jillian as they push and push the
contestants through their workouts.
This is a great article I think we all
can relate to. |

![Peggy Smith](newslettermarchapril2011_files/image005.gif)
|
|
![](Fishstock.JPG) |
Megan is an Assistant
Attorney General. She works in the
criminal appellate division in Daytona
Beach. Before that she worked for the
trial courts in Ocala and Gainesville.
Megan lives with her boyfriend Chris who
just started running in December.
They sometimes run together with their
dog, Jade, Megan's oldest running
partner. Chris and Megan met at
law school at UofF. Chris
works for the Public Defenders Office.
Megan grew up in
Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb
of Detroit. In High School she
swam and ran track. In college she
played rugby all four years (8
seasons) for the Indiana University
Women's Rugby Club.
Running has been in
Megan's family for a long time but
she resisted it herself. Then she
started a new High School that was
pretty far from home. She
had time on her hands before being
picked up - so she ran.
It turned out to be a
great way to deal with a lot of issues a
new school will bring and run of
the mill teenage angst. All of a
sudden, running had become a permanent
part of her life.
|
|
Megan has
two older sisters who live in Boston
raising families. Her middle
sister ran Cross Country, indoor track,
and track in college at Brown in Rhode
Island. She is very fast and
talented. Everyone in Megan's
family is, or has at some point been a
recreational runner. It is part of
most of their family vacations. In
2007 Megan, her Mom and sister ran the
San Diego Rock N Roll 1/2 Marathon for Team in
Training. Megan's Mom is
her biggest fan and supporter traveling
to all of her marathons, no |
|
matter where or how far away she is always
there. |
|
The marathon is Megan's favorite distance
with The Big Sur Marathon, her first,
being her most memorable.
She was worried about the
hills and everything else but every step of
the way was better than the one before.
She ran with a friend and they laughed,
sang, and danced the whole way. The
scenery was breathtaking and a very well run
marathon. Megan's mom met her at the
finish line which made it just perfect.
It was without a doubt one of the best days
of her life.
Before she ran her first
marathon she never thought she would run
one. She just wasn't interested.
She enjoyed running but did not have a
desire to run a marathon. Then a
running friend was helping her clean out a
shed in her yard that was infested with
rats. Megan hats rats (who doesn't?)
so she was so grateful she kept saying she
would do anything to pay her back. Her
friend was silent for awhile and finally
said, 'you can pay me back by running The
Big Sur Marthon with me.' |
![](NWM%20'10.JPG) |
Now she's training for her 5th. marathon.
She's thinking of the the Martian Marathon
in her hometown of Dearborn, Michigan |
|
Meagan runs 5 to 6 days a week. Seldom
does track workouts but recently has been
doing Yasso workouts. She's cautious
about trying new workouts without guidance.
Megan usually runs alone but
recently met up with some ladies to share
her long runs with. She received a
Garmin for her birthday and loves to run
with it and her Ipod - which she would trade
for a talkative running partner any
day. |
|
![](Palm%20Coat%20half.JPG) |
Some day
Megan would like to go back and run Big Sur
again. Eventually she would like to
run Detroit and Eugene. She's not too
concerned about her times but nice to PR is
an added surprise. She would like to
do an ultra one day. She says you
never have two bad runs in a row. If
you go out one day and just feel awful - no
matter what the cause (food, dehydration,
lack of sleep, etc.) your next run will
always be better. |
|
Megan is a
vivacious, outgoing young lady with plenty
of energy and spirit. She does not
hold back. When the club announced we
needed a new secretary, guess who was the
first to raise her hand? She has been
an asset to the club and meets members full
of enthusiasm. |

Who makes what? |
|
There are only a limited
number of major appliance manufacturers left in the
marketplace. Over the years, the big ones have
bought up the smaller ones and merged those product
designs into their own product lines. They now
produce products under the various brand names they
own. |
|
Often there is only cosmetic
differences in the appearance of the appliance,
while the underlying mechanical workings are very
similar, if not the same. The manufacturers warranty
may also differ between brands and models. |

Sue O'Malley
is on a roll as she racks in bunches of
accomplishments since turning 50 last summer.
Sue O'Malley, Father Lopez Head Cross
Country Coach and Track and Field Coach, has signed a
contract to become part of the Brooks running shoe
program called The Brooks I.D. Program for 2011. Brooks
I.D. stands for Inspire Daily. These two simple words
guide the principles of the program. Brooks I.D. is made
up of over 800 members who are active in their running
communities and share a passion for the Brooks brand.
They are runners who are winners in their own right:
Winning their age divisions, accomplishing their
personal goals, pushing their own limits, and, by
extension, encouraging others to do the same. They are
coaches, mentors, and leaders. This program is by
invitation only.
Sue certainly uses her athletic talent to help carry out
the Brooks mission: To inspire people to run and be
active not only at Father Lopez but throughout the
Daytona community .Sue competed for the Brooks shoe
company when she competed in the first women's
Marathon Olympic Trials in 1984. |
|
|
Sue set a new age group record at the DeLeon
Springs 1/2 Marathon in January. She was also part
of the Ragnar relay team from Miami to the Keys. It
was definitely a highlight of her running career. Her
team finished 2nd. overall. In February, Sue received
the USATF Phidippides Gold Long Distance Award for 2010.
This award is given to individual athletes for outstanding
performance and endurance in Long Distance running. |
|
And to round off her accomplishments for the past two
months, Sue won a national age group title at the Melbourne
1/2 Marathon USATF Championship. She won the 50-54 age
group and was 2nd. in the master's division for the Florida
State Championship. |

B.A.A. to Offer Fastest Qualified Runners Early Acceptance
into 2012 Boston Marathon With New Registration Process
|
![](baa_logo.png) |
BOSTON – The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) announced a
change in its registration process for the Boston Marathon,
allowing the fastest qualifiers to enter the earliest and
with a rolling admission system while also offering all
eligible runners an increased registration period. The
changes in registration are a response by the B.A.A. to
greater than ever demand by runners to gain entry into the
Boston Marathon and culminate more than three months of
analysis, including input from the running industry. Rather
than accepting runners who have met the qualifying standards
on a first come, first served approach, a more systematic,
performance-based process will be employed. |
|
For the 2012 Boston Marathon, registration will extend for two
weeks, beginning on Monday, September 12, 2011 and
continuing until Friday, September 23, 2011. The qualifying
times for the 2012 Boston Marathon will not change from
recent past years since the standards had been previously
announced and have been in effect since last September.
However, the new registration process addresses the
increased demand among qualified runners to participate in
the Boston Marathon and will accommodate those who are the
fastest qualifiers first. |

The
Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Life is not merely about
running. It is about living - to your fullest potential.
Amby Burfoot, one of running's wisest voices, presents 15
essential life lessons about passion, courage, materialism,
failure, regeneration, and more, all learned from experience
during his more than 35 years of running. In the book,
Amby discusses the essential traits of a runner - traits
that are also essential for all people wishing to reach their
long-term goals. He discusses the writings, music and
quotes that have inspired him throughout his long career.
Most important, he explains that winners are not those that
cross the finish line first, but rather those who are able to
discover more about themselves with every step. |

Youth
is not a time of life, it's a state of mind. You are as young as
your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your
self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope,
as old as your despair. - Unknown |

People seek a challenge just as
fire seeks a flame • Chinese Proverb |
|
He entertained the fervent wish
that a bolt of lightening would shoot from the sky and strike him
dead on the spot, ending his pain. But another part of him
wished for the strength to accelerate, to take off like he did at
the start of his morning runs, fresh and energetic after a night's
sleep. |

I love testing myself more than I
fear being beaten, and front running is the ultimate test. You
need total, irrevocable commitment to see the race
through to the end or it cannot justify your effort |

AN
IRISH FRIENDSHIP WISH |
|
May there always be work for your hands to do;
May your purse always hold a coin or two;
May the sun always shine on your window pane;
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain;
May the hand of a friend always be near you;
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you |
