series

There is a new (old) running series in town!  Headed up by Bob Hamlin, the new series will replace the old Daytona Area Grand Prix.

The Daytona Running Series was developed in order to provide a  season long running program for runners of all ages and abilities the opportunity to not only be recognized for performances in individual races but to earn points for participation as well as promoting running for sport, fun and fitness.  The series includes races for distance runners as well as 5k runners and walkers! By participating, you are making a conscious  choice for a healthier lifestyle – one event at a time.

There will be 10 races in the series beginning with Halifax Health-Hospice Fall 5K in Port Orange on September 13. Over the course of the season races will include distances of 5K, 10K, 15K, 10 Mile and Half Marathon. The Running Series concludes with the Go Get Screened 5K on April 23, 2015 where the presentation of the Series awards will take place.

Palmer College Paint The Towne 5K will be the third race of the series!

National RUN@WORK Day Presented by the RRCA

Friday September 18, 2015

On September 18, 2015 the RRCA will present the 10th Annual RUN@WORK Day and the 4th Annual RUN@School Day, nationwide fitness efforts.

The goal of RUN@WORK Day and RUN@School Day is to encourage adults and children to get at least 30-minutes of exercise each day, in accordance with the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, either before work/school, during lunch, or immediately following work/school. RUN@WORK Day also encourages companies to help employees schedule time for physical activity. Incorporating exercise into one’s daily routine can markedly improve one’s overall physical health.

Peggy Smith

A true Floridian!  Kathleen grew up on the west coast in the little town of Spring Hill with her Mom, Dad, and sister Colleen.  She moved to the Daytona area in 1997 when husband, Gary, proposed.  They are resident Managers at U-Store Self Storage on Nova Rd.

Kathleen played tennis in middle &  high school but she didn't start running until 2011.

Kathleen was going to the gym and experimenting on the treadmill.  She went to the internet, found the Daytona Beachcombers and Donna &  Jerry Hiatt.  They welcomed her, gave her advice and she started joining them on the Sunday runs.  Running is the first activity that Kathleen truly loves.  She has made amazing friends along her journey to health and happiness.  She used to have a hard time catching her breath when she walked fast, but now she runs, she feels strong and can breathe.

Kathleen has been an insulin dependent diabetic for 33 of her 45 years.  Instead of multiple daily injections she has a tubeless insulin pump ( Omnipod ) that delivers insulin constantly.  When she runs she can decrease the amount of insulin depending on how far and fast she will go.  Her continuous glucose monitor (Dexcom) tells her her blood sugar every 5 minutes and she knows if it is going up or down and can adjust accordingly. These 2 devices that she weasr constantly have helped Kathleen understand her diabetes and keep it under control.  Technology is wonderful.  She carries her devices with her on long runs along with sugar and carbs in case her blood sugar drop.

The Swamp House 1/2 Marathon is Kathleen's most memorable race, her first 1/2 and it was held on her 45th. birthday!  It reminded her that she can run and when she doubts herself, her biggest supporter and encourager is hubby, Gary.  He trained with Kathleen to help her prepare for her first 1/2.  Although Kathleen did well in the 1/2, her favorite distance is still the 5K.

Kathleen runs 4-5 days a week and sometimes the treadmill at the gym.  She prefers running with her friends that help motivate and inspire her.  She has joined several group runs since first showing up for a Sunday  run at The Hiatt's house and often they are faster than she is but she gives it her all which makes her stronger than she was the day before.  She would like to run a 5K in 30 minutes but is more interested in just running than worrying about her time.  She enjoys running different races all over the area.

Kathleen's advice.  If you are a social person, a good running group can give you motivation and encouragement.  Runner's are very welcoming and helpful with their time and advice.  If you are not real social, a group can help find you great places to run.  Invest in some good shoes and enjoy the run!

Some things you may not know about Kathleen. 1.  She belongs to the Daytona Area Miata Club and really likes to race at the Auto Cross. 2.  She has been a Big Sister in the Big Brothers Big Sisters for 10 years.  And 3.  She is Daytona Beachcombers Club Secretary!

Her biggest challenge  Clearing her mind of 'can't'.

Favorite Book The Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss (it's not just a kids book)
Proudest Running Memory Finishing the Swamp House 1/2 Marathon with her husband Gary.  Her legs were like jello but it was one of her happiest memories!

Kathleen definitely has been an asset to our running community.  She says each and every runner that she has spent time with she has learned something from and inspires her daily.  I believe it is the other way around.  I am in awe of Kathleen with her positive attitude, her challenge with her diabetes, and her spirit to meet up with other runner's as she continues her journey in this running world.  I am thankful to her for her always reaching out to volunteer for the club and races!   You inspire me Kathleen Jacobs!  Donna Hiatt

Lean Green Smoothie

Green drinks are everywhere and can be a quick and easy way to add multiple sources of nutrition into your day. Juice and smoothies can help to jumpstart your day to give you energy or give you a boost later in the day, for a quick afternoon snack.

This Green smoothie recipe is packed with nutrients. 4 fruits and veggies and lots of good protein to get you going. It has kale, which is a superfood, dates which have potassium and fiber to help us lose weight, pineapple which adds some sweetness and is an anti-inflammatory and four different sources of protein—kale, yogurt, almonds and almond milk.

The cucumbers have multiple B-vitamins along with magnesium and potassium.

When you put all of these together, you’re getting an impressive list of health benefits all in one glass! And by keeping it raw and putting it into the blender, you’re not losing any of the food value that sometimes gets cooked away when food is prepared. Just remember they do have calories, but they are good calories, so you just want to balance it out with the rest of your daily caloric intake.

Ingredients:

1 cup Kale (or spinach)
1 Tbsp. Chopped Almonds (or any other preferred nut)
¼ Cup, sliced Cucumber ( I like the English kind!)
¼ Cup Pineapple (2-3 chunks)
2 Dates, pitted
½ Cup Unsweetened almond or coconut milk (or lowfat milk, coconut milk or soy milk)
½ Cup plain nonfat Greek yogurt (or Silken Tofu)

Directions:

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth.

Cheers everyone!
